Is air a friend or foe of wine? It is in fact both. The most important factors are: when in the life of the wine is the air in contact, what style of wine is intended, and what is the intended cellaring period for the wine. Wine tasting at Monarch Restaurant in Hotel ZaZa

Sterling Minor, a Houston Wine contributor, recently attended a wine tasting at Hotel ZaZa in its Monarch Restaurant. His hosts were Alex Aland, wine buyer and sommelier of Monarch and Leif Graham of Republic National Distributing Company (the supplier of three of the six wines). This is a public event, offered each month at a cost of about $45. Read about Sterling’s wine experience.

Messina Hof – Texas’ Most Awarded Winery in HLS&R

Messina Hof Winery and Resort, one of the fastest growing and award-winning wineries in Texas, recently announced its winning wines for the 9th consecutive year in the 2012 Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo (HLSR) Wine Competition. The 9th annual Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo International Wine Competition was held on November 12-13, 2011 at Reliant Center. Wine entries included 2,454 wines from 736 wineries in Texas, across the United States and around the world. Medals were awarded by a panel of judges consisting of local and national wine experts. Messina Hof Winery received the most medals with a total of 20 overall awards, including Texas Class Champion Double Gold for Messina Hof’s Solera, Texas, 2004. Continue reading

Yao Ming has started a Napa Valley wine company.

Retired Houston Rocket, Yao Ming, has started a Napa Valley wine company. It’s first target is the upscale wine market in China.  Next year promises to see marketing of Yao’s wines in the United States.  Read details here.
